About Part-time work

Part-time work on a student visa is limited to a total of 28 hours per week.

You will not be able to cover all your tuition and living expenses with only a part-time work.

If you want to work in Japan, you should obtain a working visa instead of a student visa.

Current students must inform the school when they start a new part-time work or change their work.

"Permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted" and hours of part-time work

International students with permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted (which can be obtained at the airport upon landing in Japan) may work part-time for up to 28 hours per week, or up to 8 hours per day during long vacations such as summer breaks.

However, you are NOT allowed to work more than 28 hours per week. The 28 hours per week does not mean 28 hours per part-time job. For example, if you are working at several part-time jobs, the total hours must be within 28 hours per week.

If you work more than 28 hours per week, you will be in violation of the law, and when you renew your student visa, or when you apply for a work visa after finding a job, you will NOT be allowed to renew or change your visa because of the violation of the law.

Furthermore, you may be subject to deportation for illegal employment. Deportation means that a foreigner who has committed an illegal act will be forcibly removed from Japan, and the deported foreigner will not be allowed to enter Japan for five years.

The Immigration Bureau can check the status of part-time jobs for international students through a variety of information and surveys.

Some people may think that 28 hours per week is not enough, but in some other countries, international students are not allowed to work.
